Islam: A Way of Life Rooted in Faith and Surrender

Islam, meaning “peace” and “submission,” is a monotheistic religion based on the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), the final messenger of Allah (God). The Qur’an, the holy book of Islam, was revealed to Prophet Muhammad over a span of 23 years through the angel Gabriel (Jibreel). The opening verses of the Qur’an remind us of God’s mercy and greatness: “In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful…”
“Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds… Guide us to the straight path…” Core Beliefs A Muslim is one who: Believes in the oneness of Allah, Recognizes Prophet Muhammad as His final messenger, Accepts the Qur’an as the word of God, Believes in angels, holy books, prophets, and the Day of Judgment. The Five Pillars of Islam The foundation of Islamic practice is built on five essential acts of worship:

  1. Shahadah (Faith): Declaration of belief in one God (Allah) and Muhammad as His prophet.
  2. Salat (Prayer): Offering five daily prayers, fostering discipline and spiritual connection.
  3. Zakat (Charity): Giving 2.5% of one’s wealth annually to the needy, promoting social justice.
  4. Saum (Fasting): Observing fasts during the holy month of Ramadan, encouraging patience, empathy, and reflection.
  5. Hajj (Pilgrimage): Undertaking a pilgrimage to Mecca, once in a lifetime, symbolizing unity and equality before God.

“All human beings are equal before Allah. The most righteous are the most beloved to Him.” Righteousness and Virtue Islam emphasizes righteous actions over rituals: Belief in God and the Last Day, Charity to the needy and orphans, Keeping promises and commitments, Observing prayer and fulfilling moral duties “It is not righteousness that you turn your faces to the East or the West, but righteousness is to believe in Allah…” – Qur’an Three Key Elements of Islam, Islam (Submission) – Following God’s commands, Iman (Faith) – Belief in unseen truths and divine guidance, Ihsan (Excellence) – Living with sincerity, humility, and moral virtue. These three dimensions together form the complete framework of a Muslim’s spiritual and worldly life.
